What Lies Ahead
Lyrics
Lies ahead what lies ahead
And it all works out for the best
Lies ahead what lies ahead
Look at me I'm lies ahead ahead of the rest
Time again, time again
Some would call it inventory
Time again, time again
Time to go on up to the second story
I have heard that youth is wasted
On the young, but I've sent spies
Who return to plead the case is
Wisdom's wasted on the wise
Take a spin, oh take a spin
And it looks like the mountains are shifting
But look again, oh look again
Can't you see that it is you that is drifting?
Sometimes I try and I count all my blessings
But I don't have the fingers or the toes
So I count on te one that is pressing
I take a deep breath and just let it go
I have heard that youth is wasted
On the young, but I've sent spies
Who return to plead the case is
Wisdom's wasted on the wise
Still I know some quiet places
Still I can take home the prize
I'm so close I can almost taste it
I've just got to watch my...
Lies ahead what lies ahead
And it all works out for the best
Lies ahead what lies ahead
Look at me I'm lies ahead ahead of the rest
I have heard that youth is wasted
On the young, but I've sent spies
Who return to plead the case is
Wisdom's wasted on the wise
Reflections
I still play this song often. It's a great exercise for my fingers, and I still relate to what I was writing at the time. I, like most people, have a set of convenient stock answers to things that help us get through life. They are not always, exactly, lies, but they are not the whole truth either.
That's Chris Perry from Pearl, MS on background vocals. I don't know what happened to him. The last time I saw him was Dallas in '99. If anybody knows his whereabouts please let me know.
What do I mean by "wisdom is wasted on the wise?" Well, it seems that there must be at least a handful of wise people in every generation, but what do they do with it? It seems like it, wisdom, doesn't get spread around very easily. I guess wisdom doesn't come to proactive, "type A" personalities. Maybe that's one of the prerequisites of being wise - not being type A. Maybe that's one of the great paradoxes of life.
